SYNOPSIS:
On a cold winter night of January 1914. Joe Hill showed up at a doctors house at eleven thirty PM. with a gunshot wound to his chest. He claimed he was in a fight over a women. The doctor treated him for the wound and sent him home. Two hours earlier, a murder was committed not far away. When the doctor realizes this he notifies police about Hill who is then promptly arrested.
Joe Hill being a member of a radical socialist labor union earns him a lot of disdain from the power structure in Utah and sympathy from the unions. Big Bill Haywood, the head of Joe's union sees the upcoming prosecution of Hill as an opportunity to create a martyr out of Joe which would be a large rallying point for his union. Samuel Gompers of the more conservative AFL union, rejects this and attempts to persuade his followers that Hill is being treated fairly by the courts.
Virginia Snow Stephen and Dr. Mchugh, both being death penalty opponents become involved in the hill case. Virginia and Joe develop an attraction for each other as Dr. Mchugh begins to questions Hills innocence.
At first, Joe Hill appears to be a selfless advocate for socialist and union causes. However, as the story follows the events of the trial, conviction, appeals and finally execution, our impressions of Joe Hill change from an altruistic person to one who has a cold heart and contempt for society.
The story also gives the viewer a picture of the competing union ideals as pre Soviet style socialism was a growing philosophy throughout the world.
